Did you know?
The word rapport bears a resemblance to a more common English word, report, which is no coincidence: both words come ultimately from the Latin verb portare, meaning "to carry," and both traveled through French words meaning "to bring back" on their way to English. Report has been in use since the 14th century, when it entered Middle English by way of Anglo-French, the French language as it was spoken in medieval England. Rapport was first used in the mid-15th century as a synonym of report in its "an account or statement" meaning.
Last week, I talked about good rapport regarding relationships. This week, I would like to continue on about that, but in the other direction. The opposite of Good is Bad, right? So, if rapport is about the relationship, and all is well, then we could rightly say I have a good rapport with a certain person. But what if when someone hears your name, the thoughts that immediately come to mind are negative, the rapport is bad. There is no way around that. Bad is the only word that comes to mind. It needs to be fixed.
This is where this definition comes into play. To carry, or to bring back. Yes, it is possible to bring back good rapport to a relationship. It’s hard work, but possible. If you truly want to fix a relationship, start with good communication. Admit your faults and wrongs on your behalf of the relationship. If the person on the other side reconciles then it is a relationship worth salvaging. Put the work into making sure you have good rapport from then on. If you do the work and the person on the other side of the relationship still acts negatively and doesn't want to bring the relationship back….. it’s ok to walk away.
What are you striving to do in a relationship? Do you want to be on the good or bad side of the report? I can walk you through how to reconcile, grow and foster a relationship so that it has a good rapport on your side. After all, that is all you can control.
