Time for a quick self check in. Ask yourself, when was the last time you felt happy? Do you feel happy right now? Are you happy every day? The term happiness is used in the context of mental or emotional states, including positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to joy. A few years ago, the song “Happy” by Pharrell Williams was a major radio hit. (If you haven’t ever heard the song, take a quick listen here!) The hook of that upbeat song encouraged listeners to clap along if they knew what happiness meant. It inspired a movement online and people from all over the world created videos where groups clapped along, danced, and embraced happiness together. I’d like to think that most of us strive to live a happy life. So, how we can achieve contentedness on a more regular basis? Researchers who study happiness have concluded that happiness is not out of our reach and can be manifested through our day-to-day choices even when life seems out of control.
