What Are You Chasing?

Updated: Mar 2, 2022

There’s an old Russian proverb that says, “If you chase two rabbits, you will not catch either one.”

What a great reminder of the importance of focus in our quest for success. If you want to become truly great at anything, you need to be disciplined in your unrelenting pursuit of it.

You can’t go off chasing other things and you can’t get too easily distracted. You can’t give up too soon. You need to clearly identify what you want and work persistently towards it for a long period of time.

I’ve tried chasing two rabbits in the past, most recently by taking on both my business and a church fellowship group about three years ago. What I found was that while I had enough time on paper to dedicate to both, I often felt that I wasn’t able to perform at the level that I expected from myself. I wasn’t able to sustain the emotional focus required to generate and implement innovative ideas, to develop my skills fully to take both my business and my fellowship group to the next level.

It was only when I took the plunge and recommitted to my business on a full-time basis that I felt as though I was able to set and achieve the ambitious goals that were necessary to maximize my skills and passion.

Do you feel frustrated by your inability to make progress towards your goals? Perhaps you’re just distracted by conflicting goals, making it difficult to consistently and congruently focus on taking the necessary action to become successful.

Of course, there are those who seem to enjoy chasing two rabbits.  It gives them the excuse that they are at least doing something, even if they are unsuccessful at either.

Don’t confuse activity with achievement. Stop chasing two rabbits and focus on the one thing that you were made to do. Develop your skills in that one area and become the world-class exponent that we need you to be.
