Face Your Fears

Updated: Mar 27, 2022

The Greek philosopher, Aristotle once said, “He who has overcome his fears will be truly free.”

As a coach, it is my job to help my clients overcome their fears. I have come to learn that no matter how confident you are about the decision to make a major change in your life, there will always be an element of fear involved. That fear needs to be faced and overcome before you can move on to the next level.

Some of the most common phrases people use to express their fear are: “I’m not good enough”, or “I know it’s just not going to happen”, and “I’m just so overwhelmed, I don’t know where to start.”

Think about those statements for a moment, they are all “me” centric. Fear is extremely personal. When we start believing the fearful voice in our head, that’s when we lose opportunities to grow. Even worse, if you don’t face your fears, you will eventually accept those negative thoughts as truth.

In the excerpt below from my latest book, Communication – Discover Your True Wealth, I address the topic of fear.

“Only the courageous few among us will step out of our comfort zones and declare, ‘I am going to take action.’ This is where you start committing to achieving your dreams. You decide to finally take that trip overseas, to start your own business, or to write your memoir. In that moment of decision, you are leaving your safe zones behind and stepping out into the light.”

If you want to experience richness and beauty in your life, then you have to make space for fear. In order to move forward, you must first accept that your fears are part of the journey.

Here is an exercise for you to try. List your fears out on paper, call them by name as though you were describing yourself in the third person. For example, you might list something like “perfectionist, worry wart, or people-pleaser.” By writing out your fears in that manner, you can start to recognize that your fears are often based on your perceptions and not on reality. By calling out your fears, you take away their power and can recognize them more easily when you get ready to take that next step.

Are you ready to arm yourself with the tools to face your fears? Do you want to heal your relationships, build your business, or find guidance and direction? No matter what your goals may be, effective communication is the ultimate key to success. There’s nothing more empowering than moving to the next level and knowing how to get there.
